Here I am trying to delve into manga again... unfortunately, this is a manga long out of print in the US when TokyoPOP went out of business way back when. Magical x Miracle by Mizutani Yuzu is definitely worth a read! I was one of my first manga series to read when I was young. A bunch of TokyoPOP manga that are out of print are! This was before the rest of the manga companies gained steam, when TokyoPOP was one of the only manga publishers in America!
This manga is about a young girl named Merleawe who has just moved to the city to attend the magic school and become a wizard. While she was out and about shopping for her books, a man whisks her away to the castle! He brings her to a small group who ask her to stand in for the Master Wizard who went missing due to the fact that her face is identical to his! Mel accepts and thus starts her journey of becoming a wizard!
(SPOILER WARNING! START)
Sylthfarn, the missing Master Wizard, has been missing for not that long when Mel is asked to substitute as him. The small group who think up the plan of having her sub in are: Vaith, the man who abducts her the first time, is a member of the Black Knights; Glenn, a priest who is friends with Sylth and becomes an advisor of sorts for him; Fern, a Hahze, known for their high resistance of magic, is Sylth's body double and best friend; lastly there is Yue, he is the undersecretary, the position directly under the Master Wizard and acts as an advisor as well.
These four help Mel become more like Slyth and help her with her magic as well. They have to try and dupe a whole kingdom after all. As things progress, unfortunately not much happens as this is a short series only six volumes long, we delve into the background of the four guys and learn more about them. All this is happening while Mel is trying to juggle between being Slyth in the castle and herself at school.
Slyth's disappearance isn't really the focal point in this manga, even though it feels like it should be. Despite Mel's personality, you don't get to see her try her best to go out and search for Slyth herself. The only side you see is where Mel is being taught to be Slyth, the whole disappearance apparently goes out the window until volume five! Where they find out from a short lived random character that Slyth is dead! Apparently he was killed when a carriage hit him. That's it, no further explanation other than he was going to see his mother, decided to come home and WHAM!
Mel then gets booted from the castle and a couple of time skips happen to the point where by the end of the manga they've jumped five years. The mangaka jumped five years in one volume and Mel magically becomes the Master Wizard...
(SPOILER WARNING! END)

(SPOILER WARNING! END)
I'm gonna be blunt here, while I do love this manga I feel like there is so much missing from it. The ending seems really rushed and there are a lot of unanswered questions by the end. I hate the ending. It honestly doesn't feel like the "true" ending that was supposed to happen. The mangaka could've prolonged the series by having the guys and Mel actually go out and look for Slyth! And if they wanted to make keep the carriage accident, make it so that Slyth falls into a coma and when he awakens he has temporary retrograde amnesia and they, including Mel, help him get back his memories!
Then, Mel will finally get the chance to meet Slyth face to face and they can delve into the mystery of why the heck they are identical! I know it's manga and I should take things at face value, but there's no way they can look as identical as they do, to the point where everyone thinks Mel is Slyth, without them either being identical twins separated at birth or some kind of blood relations! It would make sense if they were twins, especially with how the fact that they think alike. Many time throughout the manga Mel will say or do something that Slyth has done or would do.
Also there's the fact that she could only do flower magic was a big thing to Mel's character but she rarely uses it. Maybe like five times does she do the spell? Anyways, there could've been so much more that happened instead of "oh well, he gone la da da... time skip la da da.... Master Wizard level unlocked!" Mel's trials and tribulations are not even depicted in the manga. You rarely get to see magic in a manga about magic.
Despite all my griping I do like the manga for what it is, I just wish there were more to it. Hope you guys enjoyed this one! Tell me, have you read this before? If not, would you be interested in picking it up? Please tell me in the comments and I'll catch you guys next week!

I'm writing so many of these that I'm running out of COVID-19 updates for you all. I literally just wrote the No Game No Life post yesterday and nothing major has happened as of yet. So just stay as safe as you can and stay home! #stayhome
